It comes some eight years after Meyiwa was shot in Vosloorus at the home of his then-girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo.

The accused are also facing armed robbery charges.

Natasha Venter is an advisor to Afriforum's Private Prosecution Unit, which is representing the Meyiwa family.

"Although the legal representative of four if the accused persons has indicated that he would bring a special plea arguing that his clients have been wrongfully accused, the trial is expected to start today and the accused persons will be expected to plead 'guilty or not guilty and then the State will continue by providing the testimony."

She says the family feels a sense of relief ahead of the trial.

"This is a further step to bring closer years after the horrible incident, the murder of their son and their brother."

Meanwhile, one of the men accused of killing Meyiwa was sentenced to 12-years for attempted murder in a separate case last week.
