Sentencing of Bonginkosi Khanyile gets underway
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
DUT-based Fees Must Fall leader, Bonginkosi Khanyile will soon know his fate.

The student activist made headlines when he was arrested and held without bail for nearly six months in 2016 and 2017.
Khanyile was last year convicted of four of the 13 charges with which he was originally charged and sentencing proceedings are set to begin today.
Magistrate, Siphiwe Hlophe last August found Khanyile guilty of charges of public violence, failing to comply with a police instruction and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The activist struck a deal with the State which saw with an agreement with the State which saw him make a series of admissions that - in effect - meant he confessed to these crimes and the remaining charges were subsequently abandoned.
We have, of late, seen the courts handing prison time for public violence but we expect Khanyile's legal team will today be asking for a suspended sentence for their client.
