Sentencing of Govender brothers in July unrest matter postponed
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Durban brothers Dylan and Ned Govender will have to wait a little longer to be sentenced for assaulting several men during the unrest in July 2021.
The pair were acquitted of murder following the death of Mondli Majola in Phoenix.
But they were convicted of assaulting a 19-year-old and another man, Nkululeko Mangwe - as well as the attempted murder of Mxolisi Putuzo.
The Govender brothers were supposed to start hearing their fates on Tuesday.
But the State asked for a postponement, as the prosecution only received a correctional services report today while the court was in session.
The State prosecutor said a probation report is still outstanding as the probation officer only consulted with the suspects, not the victims.
The brother's defence attorney says a forensic psychologist who will testify in mitigation must view both reports.
The judge questioned why the correctional report was only made available today, telling the court the delays were unacceptable.
The matter has been postponed to August.
The brothers’ bail has been extended.
