Sending me to prison will be death sentence: Zuma

Former president Jacob Zuma says sending him to prison, at his age, would be no different to handing him a death sentence.

The 79-year-old, who was slapped with a 15-month sentence for contempt of court, won't be going to jail anytime soon.

The Constitutional Court has agreed to hear his urgent application to review or set aside its verdict on 12 July.

Zuma, who hasn't yet had his Covid-19 vaccine, told journalists at his Nkandla home Sunday night that going to prison during the pandemic and at his age is as good as sentencing him to death.

"My age and health condition and any other mitigating circumstances were not considered when the imprisonment was decided. My family and my comrades insist that these injustices need to be exposed."

News of Zuma's address drew crowds of supporters over the weekend, with a long convoy of vehicles seen making its way from Durban to Nkandla on Sunday.

The ANC also sent national executive committee representatives to his home.

Zuma says he's very concerned that the country isn't moving forward anymore.

He's also taken a swipe at the current government and its leadership.

"I am very concerned that South Africa is fast sliding back to apartheid type rule. I am facing long detention without trial. We have a level 4 lockdown with all hallmarks of a state of emergency and the curfews of the 1980s."
