‘Send me to the gallows’: Bester pleads for death sentence
Updated | By Bulletin
Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester on Wednesday told the High Court in Bloemfontein to order his death sentence and release his co-accused

Bester's lawyer, Mohamed Seedat, has withdrawn from the case, citing consultation difficulties.
In an outburst, Bester addressed the court, claiming the justice system is unfair.
He also alleged that political interference is controlling court proceedings.
"I woke up at 2 o'clock. I have had chains on my feet, my feet are ice. This is not the way I want to proceed, Your Honour.
"If this court can accept the petition in a death sentence, I will agree to it so we end this matter, and I can be put to rest and release these people because they know nothing. I know what I have done and not done. I am sorry to have an outburst. It is a lot for me to take."

Bester, his co-accused Nandipha Magudumana and seven others face various charges relating to his escape from a maximum security prison.
Six of the nine accused are out on bail.
Free State Deputy Judge President Cagney Musi postponed the trial so that Bester could appoint a new legal representation.
"I don't think it would be wise for you to conduct your defence,” Musi told Bester.
“Your matter is postponed to 24 July 2024. Accused numbers 1, 7 and 8, you are in custody. Accused numbers 2 to 6, plus accused number 9, the bail is extended."
