Security tight in Joburg as world leaders arrive for BRICS Summit

As South Africa rolls out the red carpet for the 15th BRICS summit in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, the police minister's assured guests and the country that security will be tight.

 "It's the second time we host BRICS and it was a big event in 2010 and we are handling these events with aplomb.

We had the Rugby World Cup, and the cricket and soccer world cup and we have been hosting these big capacities and capabilities.

 

"We are there to make sure that everybody is safe, including the high-profile visitors and also ordinary South African and delegates."

Police Minister Bheki Cele says police have been carrying out final security checks in and around the convention centre.  

 

The SANDF has also deployed troops to the venue. 

 

Over 40 heads of state and hundreds of international delegates are attending the three-day summit which among other things will explore trade and investment opportunities and the bloc's possible expansion. 

 

Engagements have also been scheduled with the New Development Bank and other councils.

 

Meanwhile, China says President Xi Jinping was warmly welcomed by President Cyril Ramaphosa when he arrived in South Africa for the summit.
