A security guard was shot dead when a gang of robbers pursued him and his colleagues to the Kranskop police station on Monday night, where they had fled to seek help, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Security guard killed
About 15 people broke into a business in Kranskop at 22:00, Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

The alarm was triggered and, when security guards arrived, the robbers shot at them. Realising they were outnumbered the guards fled to the Kranskop police station to get help.

"The suspects followed them to the police station and continued shooting at them."

One security guard was shot dead in his car.

At the police station, officers opened fire on the gang.

They fled in about seven cars and police gave chase.

They managed to get away in the Eshowe area.

No police officers were injured. Cases of burglary, murder, and attempted murder were opened.

KwaZulu-Natal's acting commissioner Major-General Bheki Langa condemned the attack on security guards and police and vowed to arrest the gang.

"Their brazen act of violence is an indication of the threat they pose to ordinary citizens and they do not belong in our society," he said.
