Some 300 students breached the institution, making their way onto campus from the main entrance on Varsity Drive.

The protestors interrupted lectures before police arrived and dispersed them.

Durban Metro Police say they're monitoring the situation this morning, after students gathered again outside the entrance.

Their demands include accommodation and an end to financial exclusion.

"Our problems are many," says SRC president Wandile Majozi.

"We don't have residences that's our main issue, we also want additional buses in residences. If you had to see the situation here at UKZN it is so disgusting, you have over 100 students filling a 70-seater bus you have students standing even near the door."

UKZN's confirmed in a statement that all its residences have reached full capacity.

It's encouraging students to seek accommodation at private residences.

Majozi says some students are homeless.
