Security has been beefed up at 4 state hospitals in KZN affected by the ongoing strike by outsourced support staff.
These include Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, King Dinuzulu Hospital and King Edward Hospital. 2 people were shot dead at the King Edward Hospital in Durban on Monday. This after they made their way inside the facility, shooting and injuring a security guard who returned fire.
Yesterday KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Bhekinkosi Langa, visited King Edward Hospital.
Dhlomo says the security is to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
"We want to commend our staff members who have continued to work under those conditions and also thank our police who have been there and have been visible," he said.
"The visibility of police in all these Durban hospitals is going to be stepped up and we are not going to tolerate people who are intruders coming in to disturb lives," Dhlomo said.
