Search for Titanic sub debris to continue

The US Coast Guard says a search will continue in the North Atlantic Ocean to find whatever's left of a submersible which officials now believe imploded.

It's thought all five men on board were killed as they made their way to explore the wreck of the Titanic on Sunday.

All contact with the vessel was lost within two hours of its dive.

Back home, National Sea Rescue Institute has been closely following the operation.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says it must have been highly complicated given the depth they needed to search.

"No other man craft has been to this depth so that proves the complexity of this operation or search operation of this nature will be extremely difficult. Add to that, it is pitch black down there and even the amount of visibility you will have with using lighting would be reduced."

Debris from the missing vessel was found 500 metres from the Titanic wreckage on the ocean floor.

"At the end of the day, a human being is free to explore any desire that they want to and it goes to extreme sports," says Lambinon.

"We know they do activities where they know they are taking risks and they try to mitigate the risk as best as possible but are times, and we see it from people climbing the highest peak on earth, people going to space."
