KwaZulu-Natal authorities are still looking for the mother of a newborn baby girl who'd been abandoned in a bush - outside a petrol station in Durban.

The infant was found by a petrol attendant near the Engen Ushaka Convenience Centre.

He was walking back to the station after his lunch break on Tuesday, when he saw something moving in the bush.

That's when he found the newborn, wrapped in a white blanket and wearing a pink beanie.

Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says staff members then called the police.

"A case of child abandonment has been opened for investigation at the Point police station. The baby was taken to hospital for medical attention and was then taken to a place of safety. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated," she said.

Employees at the Durban petrol station say they were brought to tears after one of their colleagues found the new-born baby girl abandoned in bushes near the filling station.

The Engen Station at Ushaka wrote in a Facebook post that the little girl was found by one of the attendants yesterday.

This employee says his colleague had been returning from a lunch break when he made the discovery.

"He noticed something next to the pavement. When he looked, he had the shock of his life - because it was moving and then he discovered it was a baby. It was an infant in fact - a small, small baby," the employee said.

He says they all rushed to the infant.

"Everyone was actually very sad that something like that happened. The baby was sleeping but moved. Everyone was shocked," he adds.

The baby has been taken to a place of safety.
