Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The search for a man presumed drowned on the north coast has been called off because of crocodiles in the water.

The 23-year-old was last seen trying to cross the Amatikulu River on Wednesday afternoon.
Search and rescue teams have been wading in the water since Thursday morning looking for him.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Dylan Meyrick says the crew returned to the scene this morning to find reptile-infested water.
"Rescues swimmers and divers have combed about 1km of the river from the point of entry by the missing person to an area that is known to be frequented by crocodiles who have been witnessed in numbers today, due to the presence of the crocodiles the search has been called off for now."
