It's believed a group of armed men stormed their home in the early hours of this morning.

They allegedly shot the man dead before fleeing the scene with valuables.

The police's Jay Naicker says the victim's wife and two children were not physically hurt.

"It's alleged that at 1.30am, seven unknown gunmen entered a house on a farm in Killarney Isle's. They ransacked the house and held up the family at gunpoint. A case of household [robbery] and murder has been opened for further investigation," he said.

It comes as the African Farmers Association has condemned farm killings following the murder of an elderly farm manager in Harrismith on Friday.

Robert Rhadebe and his wife Martha were stabbed by men - who had apparently posed as wood buyers. His wife survived the attack.
