Search still on for armed gang after Mount Edgecombe robbery

A manhunt continues today for those behind a brazen robbery at a shopping centre in Mount Edgecombe, north of Durban yesterday.

An armed gang stormed the Whitehouse Shopping Centre yesterday morning, targeting a cash van that was at the mall at the time.


Five people were shot and wounded in the process as the robbers opened fire before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.


Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane says cases of attempted murder and business robbery have been opened at the Phoenix Police Station.


"When they were fleeing, it is alleged that they started shooting randomly in the premises. As a result several bystanders were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment. While they were driving away, it is also alleged that they started to shoot towards one motorist who was close by. the driver was injured and taken to hospital fro treatment," he said.


Locals who were either at the centre or nearby at the time of the robbery have shared their experiences on social media.


One woman wrote on Facebook that it was just a nightmare.


Another had been waiting in minibus taxi near the shopping centre when suddenly there was pandemonium.


"So there I am chilling in the taxi listening to my 2Pac mp3 waiting to go to town and all of a sudden I hear AK47 shots ringing out and people running for cover! These people have no mercy for the innocent," he wrote.


A resident of the Mount Edgecombe Estate heard all the shots while sitting in her house, saying it was scary.
