Scores hurt in Merebank train collision

Scores of people have been hurt after two trains collided near the Merebank Station, south of Durban.

It's understood the trains, going in opposite directions had been travelling on the same track and crashed head-on.


Leon Fourie of Life Response Ambulance Service is on the scene.


"At the moment, there's about 200 injuries on scene, many of which are green code slightly injured patients, but there a numerous, numerous seriously injured patients that are being stabilised by various emergency served at the moment," he said.


One of the injured passengers who has been travelling by train for the past 35 years spoke briefly about the moment the collision happened.


“I was sitting and busy watching the people on the train and all of a sudden I hear a bang . I then knocked my head and I knew then it was a train accident,” the man said.


Traffic has also been severely affected, with Swinton Road closed off completely.


"The traffic in the area is also severely affected due to the fact that all the emergency services are trying to get to the area. There are also people who are concerned about family members and are driving to the scene to find out what's going on," Fourie added.


eThekwini Metro Police, SAPS and other emergency services are also on the scene.


Officials will investigate why the two trains were travelling on the same track at the same time.
