School leavers should consider range of options, urges career expert

A career
expert is urging school leavers
to explore the range of options available to them, as they begin a new chapter
of learning.
Dr Shahiem Patel says while he strongly advocates for tertiary education and training as viable options for a prosperous future, there are other paths candidates can look at taking.
" I think that the reality of our economy and our labour market and access to education in the first instance can often be restrictive and prohibitive for many students and so they need to consider alternatives,” says Patel, who is the Head of School for Commerce and Management at the Regent Business School.
“I urge matriculants to explore what entrepreneurship means and more specifically what it means for them."
He believes those who didn't perform well in matric last year must give it another shot.

"If you haven't done well enough, for whatever your plan was or whatever your outcome, there is nothing wrong with trying again and doing it as many times as necessary for you to reach those goals and for you to reach those outcomes and that is the message that will permeate throughout one's career and life."
The Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation will on Tuesday brief the media on the state of readiness for the post-school education and training sector for the 2023 academic year.
