SCA dismisses Zuma 'spy tapes' appeal

Justice Eric Leach has dismissed an appeal by President Jacob Zuma and the NPA against the reinstatement of hundreds of corruption charges against Jacob Zuma in the so-called spy tapes saga.

"The following order is therefore made. The application for leave to appeal are granted. The appeals are dismissed with costs including the cost of counsel and the cost related to the application for leave to appeal. The National Prosecuting Authority and Mr. Zuma are to pay such costs jointly and severally,the one paying the other to be absolved," Justice Leach says. 

Zuma and state prosecutors appealed last year's High Court judgement that overturned the NPA's decision to drop corruption charges relating to fraud and money laundering against the president.

NPA head, Mokotedi Mpshe decided to drop some 783 corruption charges. 

In 2016, the NPA's decision to drop the corruption charges against Zuma - relating to fraud, racketeering and money laundering - was overturned. The North Gauteng High Court ruled that Mpshe's decision was irrational.
