SAWS says records broken during November heatwave

The SA Weather Service says the heat wave that swept across parts of the country last week, has broken temperature records for November.

The Augrabies Falls area in the Northern Cape was the hottest place in the country.


"More than 10 stations recorded the highest temperature records on the 27th, with the automatic weather station at Augrabies Fall recording the highest maximum temperature of 46.7 degrees Celsius. Breaking its previous record of 46.2 degrees Celsius which happened on the 28th of November 2019." Records were also broken in KZN.  


Forecaster Letlhogonolo Thobela says the province which was in the grip of a days-long heat wave soared to new November highs of almost 35-degrees Celcius [34.9°C] in Wentworth south of Durban 39-degrees [39.1°C] in Greytown and 40 [40°C] in Richards Bay.


These were all captured on Friday [24 November].

Thobela says weather advisories were issued for most parts of the country last week.


"On the morning of Sunday, 19th of November the Northeastern Parts of the country experienced extremely hot conditions due to a surface high pressure system."


"November records were broken in both the Maximum and minimum temperature measurements. "


"Hot conditions reached their pick on the 27th of November when extremely hot conditions where experienced in the large parts of the Northern cape, extending to the adjacent areas of the Northwest as well as the Free State province."
