Sawmu welcomes reinstatement of employees dismissed in 2019
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) in KZN says it is pleased that 119 employees will be reinstated by the Ugu District Municipality.
The group was dismissed for embarking on an unprotected strike in 2019.
"We are also still maintaining our position that to get such number of these dismissals it was actually unfortunate," says Samwu’s Xolani Shinga.
The union and the municipality reached a settlement agreement through the Labour Court in Durban on Wednesday which allows staff to return to work from the 1st of November.
Shinga says the employees will also receive 12-months of their salary as compensation for lost income.
"We are calling for all the municipalities at our KwaZulu-Natal branches that this kind of a mass dismissal must be condemned at all cost. We must always try to find a way, we sit down and then we discuss our issues with the employer and then we try and see where we differ."
