It increased by 0.4 of a percentage point in the fourth quarter of last year to 35.3% compared to the previous quarter.

Stats SA's Dihlolelo Phoshoko says it's the highest unemployment rate since the start of the Quarterly Labour Force Surveys in 2008.

"This increase in the unemployment rate was due to the large number of persons moving from the not economically active status to the employed and unemployed categories between the two quarters.

"In the fourth quarter of 2021, the expanded unemployment decreased by 0.4 of a percentage point to 46.2%, compared to third quarter of 2021."

The  number of unemployed people increased from 7.6 million to 7.9 million over that period.
