SA’s new Covid-19 cases increase, again

The new daily Covid-19 cases in South Africa have increased to over 2 000, after a week of decline.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported that there were 2 106 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours reporting cycle leading up to Wednesday evening.
This pushes the country’s total infections to 2 900 994.
The institute says the latest increase represents a 4.6% positivity rate.
An additional 108 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 87 525.
KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest increase with 626 new cases.
“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (30%), followed by Western Cape (18%), Gauteng Province accounted for 11%; Eastern Cape and Free State accounted for 10% each; Northern Cape accounted for 9%; North West accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga accounted for 5%, and Limpopo accounted for 1% of today’s new cases,” the NICD said in a statement.
There has been an increase of 143 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 6 713 people currently admitted for treatment in both public and private facilities.
On the vaccine front, 159 818 vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours.
