SA's Covid third wave longer compared to others: Phaahla

Health Minister Joe Phaahla says the country has been in the grip of the third wave of Covid-19 for longer than the time spent in first two waves of the pandemic.

"This third wave which had been very long compared to our first wave which took about 80 something days, second wave 95 [days] or so.


"We are now approaching 120 days of the third wave but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.


"As of yesterday [Thursday] our overall infection rate new cases as compared to the last seven days were down by 35 percent." 


Phaahla was briefing the media on Friday on the government's efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 as well as the country's vaccine rollout programme.


He says the overall national infection rate is dropping.


In coastal areas like KwaZulu-Natal are still recording her rates of infections and cases.


"Active cases are also down. The Western Cape, Easter Cape and KwaZulu-Natal remains still the highest numbers but they are also getting down, but those are the coastal provinces on the last three to four weeks are the ones which have been leading."
