SA’s Covid-19 cases, positivity rate continues to decrease

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says there were 578 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours reporting cycle.

The increase represents a 3.8% positivity rate, the lowest since the beginning of the third wave.


The NICD earlier said all the provinces have officially moved out of the third wave.


“Nationally we have exited the third wave according to the current definition. The national 7-day moving average of daily case numbers, positivity rate and testing rate continue to decrease, with sustained decreases seen in all provinces,” it said in a statement released on Monday evening.


A further 164 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 87 216.


KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest of 126 new cases, followed by Gauteng with 108 new infections.


Limpopo recorded the lowest with just nine new cases.


“The majority of new cases today are from KwaZulu-Natal (22%), followed by Gauteng Province (19%) Western Cape accounted for 16%; Free State accounted for 15%; Eastern Cape accounted for 9%; North West accounted for 8%; Northern Cape accounted for 6%; Mpumalanga accounted for 4%, and Limpopo accounted for 2% of today’s new cases.”


There has been an increase of 85 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with a total of 6 931 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.


On the vaccine front, 159 732 jabs were administered in the last 24 hours.
