SARS welcomes sentencing in Durban tax fraud case

SARS has welcomed the seven-year jail sentence handed down to a Durban woman - who was found to have defrauded the revenue service in 2014.
Saraspathie Vallee from Chatsworth pleaded guilty to two charges of fraud in the Durban Regional Court last week.
The 47-year-old was found to have used eFiling to fraudulently claim a VAT refund to the tune of R4 million on behalf of her company - Gutterpride.
SARS says she then transferred the money to a personal account within days of receiving the refund.
"We are obviously encouraged to see that at the end of the day - the efforts and the work we are putting into trying to identify are involved in nefarious activities that the criminal justice system is catching up with them. We would want to ensure that every cent is due to the fiscus collected," the Revenue Service's Viwe Mlezana said.
