Sardine run unlikely to hit Durban beaches
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
The 2018 sardine run might not make its way to Durban's beaches after all.
That is according the KZN Sharks Board. Officials have been monitoring the shoal’s movements closely in recent weeks. Most of the sardine activity this year has been observed off the south coast between Pennington and Sezela.
Several nets were successfully brought in this week. The board's Mike Anderson-Reade says shark safety gear has been returned to the water at all eThekwini beaches northwards.
Anderson-Reade says swells, currents and pressure from predators could be behind the reason why the fish have stayed away from Durban.
"The run started very well this year - in fact one of the best runs we have had in the last 15 years. The fish do seem to be moving south in bits and pieces but did not seem to move much further north. They favoured those Pennington and Scottburgh areas this year", he said.
"That may be what is preventing them from move up north", Anderson-Reade said.
