The KZN Sharks Board is reminding beachgoers that shark safety gear has been removed from some beaches due to the sardine run. Yesterday, the board’s Greg Thompson said sardine activity was reported between Pennington and Port Edward on the south coast.

The shoals are expected to move further north towards Durban in the coming days.

Thompson says those wanting to hit the beach should check in with lifeguards to see if it’s safe to swim.

"Along the South Coast there are no shark nets or safety gear in place. Basically from Anstey's Beach on the Bluff all the way to Port Edward Beaches - all those beach are banned", he said.

"If you are entering the water chat to the lifeguards as they may have safe secluded areas that are open for swimming. On the Durban beachfront most of those beaches are open and all the beaches from Umhlanga to Richards Bay are open", Thompson said.
