SAPS: Slain eThekwini metro cop intervened in hijacking

It's emerged that the eThekwini Metro officer killed in Pinetown on Thursday had unknowingly intervened in a hijacking in progress.

Police say the officer was on duty when he noticed a truck driving in the wrong lane along Hans Dettman Highway.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the officer instructed the truck driver to stop- without knowing that a hijacking was in progress.

"The suspects who were driving a silver Polo had hijacked the truck.
"The suspects shot and killed the metro police officer, and reports indicate that the suspects took the police officer's vehicle, firearm and fled from the scene. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned at Stapleton Road."
Pinetown SAPS are investigating charges of murder, theft and carjacking.
