Santaco urges lower booze consumption for safer roads
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The South African Taxi Council in KwaZulu-Natal is pleading with drivers and passengers to keep their alcohol consumption in check to help make roads safer.
The taxi council has intensified its safety campaign as more travellers hit the roads this holiday period.
It's installed cameras in some minibuses to monitor driver behaviour, but stresses safety is everyone's responsibility.
"The other thing that we are pushing, especially this festive season, is that road safety starts with the driver. We are saying if everybody could be able to comply, we’ll be able to minimise incidents and carnage on our roads," says SANTACO KZN spokesperson Sifiso Shangase.
"If a person is complying - we are not skipping the red robot, we are not overloading.
"There’s also the issue of alcohol consumption - this is for both drivers and commuters. If people consume alcohol, their judgement is not correct which might lead to accidents on the road."
