Santaco to play active role in festive season safety
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
South African National Taxi Association (Santaco) plans to reduce accidents during the festive season. It says it wants to particularly reduce the number of road accidents involving minibuses over the holiday period.
Eighty-five taxi ambassadors in KwaZulu-Natal will work with law enforcement officers under the Hlokomela Campaign to stop, inspect and identify vehicles that are not roadworthy.
Santaco's Sifiso Shangase says his organization will target taxi ranks this year. This will ensure that vehicles not fit for the road are identified before they transport commuters.
"They must ensure that during this festive season all their vehicles are roadworthy in terms of their tyres, brakes and so on.
"Over and above that, you tend to find that in our ranks we have hawkers who not only sell bananas and oranges. You'll find that behind that banana box, there's alcohol that is being sold and we're saying we'd want to have police and other operations taking place even in our ranks," he said.
