Santaco: Lift club owners must abide to transport rules
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has appealed to lift club businesses to stick to commuter transport rules.
The national taxi council's been commenting on reports that motorists running lift clubs have been harassed, held up at illegal roadblocks, and fined - allegedly by taxi operators at Umkomaas and KwaNdengezi.
Santaco says while it does not support these actions lift club owners, who make a profit, are meant to register as operators, acquire a professional driver's permit and adhere to other traffic requirements.

Santaco's Sfiso Shangase says the process needs to be fair for everyone.
"We still want to get an amicable solution to this problem, but the solution must be based on the subscription of the law because the law is explicit.
"If we can all be able to follow the law, I don't think we will be in big trouble where people are fighting against each other. If we say this is the law, everybody must abide, if you don't qualify, then the police must react."
