Sanral warns of road works on N2 in KZN

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has made an urgent appeal for patience as multiple road upgrades and reconstruction projects kicked off on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal this week.

The N2 from the KwaMashu interchange to the Umdloti River Bridge is being turned into a five-lane carriageway.

Trevor Zumani, a project manager at Sanral, says the roadworks are part of a bigger upgrade plan covering the entire stretch of the N2 in eThekwini.

It's a 37-month project, but Zumani says most of the work will take place at night.

The work includes remarking road lines and moving concrete barriers around.

"We have been using our electronic management control centres to put electronic signages, but our biggest challenge right now is the patients from our motorists,” says Zumani.

"We do understand it is an inconvenience for now as we reduced it to two lanes, but we urge road users to use alternative routes because our biggest challenge is people not complying with the rules. Drivers are speeding on that stretch causing a lot of accidents."

Meanwhile, motorists travelling to Durban can take the Cedara turn-off and drive along the R103 to join the N3 at the Armitage Road on-ramp.

This as reconstruction work on the N3 from Sanctuary Road to Link Road will result in the restriction of traffic to a single lane on the southbound carriageway.

The road will be reduced to only one lane at night as teams will push work on the middle and far right lanes at night for about three weeks.
