SANEF praises suspended SABC journalists

While the disciplinary hearing of three suspended SABC senior journalists is said to have been postponed indefinitely, the South African National Editors Forum says it will continue to push for the total lifting of their suspensions.

The journalists were suspended for challenging a decision by bosses to no longer broadcast violent community protests.

The three journalists as well as another five who have since publicly spoken out about the recent editorial policy changes at the SABC were jointly awarded the prestigious Nat Nakasa Award by SANEF at the weekend.

Newly-appointed SANEF chairperson Mahlatse Gallens says the SABC should always honour the Constitution in their policy decision-making.

"We do believe that what they were speaking out against was censorship within the institution but also for the greater good of South Africans.

"The issue they were raising was about ensuring that the SABC continues to carry out the public mandate from the Constitution," she said.

Meanwhile, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has confirmed that her office is investigating the public broadcaster.
