SANDF soldier jailed for murder of wife in Mpumalanga township
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A soldier with the South African National Defence Force has started serving a 15-year sentence for murdering his wife in Mpumalanga township, near Hammarsdale.
Bernard Zondi shot Nonkululeko Majola with his personal firearm in their home five years ago.
Zondi is a staff sergeant in the SANDF.
The NPA's spokesperson in KZN Natasha Kara says to avoid conviction, he tried to convince the court that his wife took her own life.
"While Zondi maintained that his wife had committed suicide, the state was adamant that he had killed her with his personal firearm. The state, represented by Regional Court Prosecutor, Mfundo Pepu, led expert evidence to this effect.
"The NPA welcomes the finalisation of this matter. Eradicating gender-based violence and femicide remains a priority of the organisation. Well done to the prosecutor and police on this matter."
