SANDF denies existence of ‘death squads’

The South African National Defence Force has denied the existence of so-called death squads within its structures.
The claims have been published in the Daily Maverick.

The website has reported on alleged incidents of torture and possibly assassinations by military members.
The head of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, responded to the claims at a media briefing in Pretoria on Thursday.
He said the defence force will always operate within the boundaries of the constitution.
"We are still that last line of defence of the people of South Africa, and in whatever we do, we do so to ensure that South Africans continue to go with the day-to-day activities without any fear."
