The South African National Civics Organisation (Sanco) in KZN has refuted reports that it expelled five of its leaders for joining the MK Party.

Sanco says the five members offered their resignations shortly after the removal of former president Jacob Zuma as the organisation’s provincial chair.

Zuma recently threw his weight behind the newly formed MK Party, saying he won’t campaign or vote for the ANC during the upcoming general elections.

SANCO, an ANC alliance partner, subsequently sacked Zuma as its KZN chair.

It said the former president was shown the door for violating the organisation's constitution by failing to attend any of its last three meetings.

Provincial secretary Sizwe Cele cautioned members against openly backing other political parties.

"Anyone within Sanco who endorses a different political party than the ANC will be in breach of the national conference resolution that Sanco is going to vote ANC in the forthcoming general election. So, anyone found in breach of that conference resolution will then be charged and be processed within internal democratic processes."
