SANBS appeals for blood donations
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The South African National Blood Service has sent out an appeal for blood donations as the new year kicks off.
"As the year begins, we would like to urge each and every person to come and donate blood at least four times a year to give the gift of life," says the service's Sifiso Khoza.
Khoza says they are thankful to the many donors who have come forward to assist over the festive season.
He says generally, the demand for blood supplies grows over the holidays due to the increased number of crashes.
Khoza has this advice for those planning on rolling up their sleeves.
"Anyone from the age of 16 and above is eligible to come and donate blood and you need to weigh at least 50kg and on the day, you need to have something to eat at least two hours prior to giving blood and some engaging in sexual activity they need to consider if their blood is safe for transfusion."
