Samwu wants probe as KZN municipalities set to delay worker salaries
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Municipal workers union, SAMWU says it's written to the Co-operative Governance Minister to intervene after staff at two KwaZulu-Natal municipalities were told they won't be paid for the next two months.
SAMWU's Dumisane Magagula says letters were issued to workers at the Msunduzi and Langalibalele Local Municipalities.
He says they're among the country's 30 municipalities that can't afford to pay salaries, due to ongoing struggles from financial mismanagement.
"The reason why municipalities would not be paying is that they are relying on equitable share to do service delivery and pay salaries. The equitable share will only be released to municipalities in the first week of July. That would be the reason why they would not be able to pay salaries immediately or they are not able to collect revenue effectively," Magagula said.
But Msunduzi's Ntobeko Ngcobo says the municipality's accounts are healthy enough to pay staff salaries.
"I can confirm that Msunduzi is not one of those municipalities because we have not received communication indicating that. Employees got paid salaries on the 24th of June," Ngcobo said.
