SAMWU seeking answers after striking member shot
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Municipal workers’ union SAMWU says it will approach the Independent Police Investigative Directive after one of its members was shot in an alleged altercation with police outside the Durban City Hall and later died.
SAMWU is accusing police of using live ammunition to disperse workers during strike action in eThekwini this week. The union’s Koena Ramotlou says they want answers.
"We will be approaching IPID to have the matter investigated so we can get down truth about what happened and whether police used rubber bullets or live rounds", she said.
SAPS spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says an inquest docket has been opened.
"We can confirm that a protestor who was found with a head injury passed away in hospital. It is unknown how he sustained the head injury", she said.
"The post mortem will determine the cause of death and an inquest docket has been opened at Durban Central police station", Gwala said.
