SAMRC: Data shows SA past COVID-19 peak

The South African Medical Research Council says it  is hopeful at signs that COVID-19 may have peaked in some parts of the country.

SAMRC says this is based on observations of the deaths registered by end of July, compared to the number they expected to have died.

In a statement the council says the pandemic has had different trajectories in the provinces.

KZN, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng had much quicker increases, compared to the Western Cape that had a slower epidemic that took weeks to set in.

Chief Specialist Scientist Professor Debbie Bradshaw says although their data does not show the medical cause of deaths it does help them provide a near real-time count of total numbers of deaths from natural and unnatural causes.

SAMRC urged doctors to ensure accurate completion of death certificates, especially if it's not COVID-19 related.
