SAMA calls for return to Level 2 lockdown
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
The SA Medical Association says our health care system isn't coping with the high number of both COVID-19 and trauma cases and is proposing that government impose a level 2 lockdown.
South Africa's crossed the grim milestone of one million COVID-19 cases.
Just over 9-and-a-half-thousand new infections have been confirmed in the last 24 hours.
SAMA says the new variant, which is highly contagious is to blame for 80% of the new cases.
Chairperson Dr Angelique Coetzee says if we go back to lockdown 2 there should be stricter restrictions on social gatherings.

She says limits on alcohol sales over the next two weeks, will alleviate the pressure on hospitals.
"So now you got a pandemic and a festive season. Surely, the correct way would have been to get a lot of doctors working temporarily with the prospective of maybe going permanent. And to make sure there are enough doctors and nursing staff in the facilities but that's not happening," says Coetzee.
"They are all skeleton staff, especially in the public sector. And they are expected to cope with the normal trauma during the festive seasons."
