SAMA appeals to govt to employ new doctors
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The South African Medical Association has appealed to the government to create opportunities of employment for over 2 000 newly qualified doctors.
This after trade union Samatu said that some 225 junior doctors who've completed their community service programmes won't have jobs in the new year, as the Health Department isn't able to offer them posts at public hospitals.
SAMA's Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa says government needs to organise itself, as the country can't go on dealing with a shortage of medical professionals.
"One, govenment does not have money, their financial year starts in April and come next year January, they will tell you that they don't have funded posts.
“So you don’t expect to relieve the healthcare system by putting more healthcare workers, especially the doctors, and also making sure that those that are in the system are not over burdened."
