SALGA: No legal reason for Abaqulusi Municipality administration

The South African Local Government Association in KZN has described as unjustified the decision to place the Abaqulusi Municipality under administration.

KZN for Cooperative Governance MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi made the decision in January, citing issues such as financial mismanagement and the illegal appointment of directors.

Abaqulusi Mayor Khehla Mkhwanazi has already threatened to apply for an interdict against the decision, saying it’s irrational.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, KZN SALGA chairperson Thami Ntuli said the decision came as a shock.

"The implementation of a Section 139 intervention has failed. Mentioning municipalities such as uThugela where an administrator has been there for more than seven years, and the cabinet has taken a decision to take Abaqulusi under administration."

"The reasons for these are extraordinary. Some councillors have been suspended over allegations of ill-discipline. This is not a valid reason. SALGA was at pains to explain to KZN Cogta that financial liquidity is not a legal reason for intervention."
