SALGA: Electricity tariff hike will lead to more illegal connections

The South African Local Government Association in KZN believes the tariff hike granted to Eskom will only lead to more people making use of illegal connections.

Energy regulator Nersa gave a green light for an 18.65% electricity price hike for Eskom on Thursday, which will kick in this April.

The power utility was also granted a 12.7% increase for the following year.

SALGA's Thami Ntuli says many municipalities are heavily indebted to Eskom.

Municipal debt owed to the utility stands at around R50 billion.

Ntuli says the looming tariff increase will worsen the situation.

"Utility services are becoming increasingly unaffordable. We also believe that there is a lot of room for Eskom to be more efficient."
