The South African Local Government Association in KZN has called for random police raids as a dedicated task team works to crack politically motivated murder cases.

SALGA on Wednesday briefed the media about its concerns over a spate of killings in the province recently.

KZN chair Thami Ntuli said it's alarming that no arrests have been made in connection with the murders of four councillors over the past month.

He says AK-47s, which aren't widely accessible, were said to have been used to carry out the crimes.

“What is increasing our worry, as SALGA in KwaZulu Natal, is a heavily contested terrain politically and the province has a terrible history of black-on-black violence. What is also not helping is some of our political leaders who are using inflammatory language during their campaigns. If we fail to act now, we will become like countries like Colombia where politicians are killed every day."

He also called on Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, together with the police, to rid the province of the scourge of political killings.

Ntuli said he's worried as the country gears up for the elections later this year.

"SALGA urges the premier to not only make a call for peace and tolerance but to commit to removing red tape that disallows protection of councillors."
