SAHRC told Cele blamed private security company for Phoenix massacre
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A man who worked for a private security group in Phoenix says he left the company after personnel were targeted online following the unrest.
Krishan Glen Naidoo testified before the South African Human Rights Commission on Thursday, which is probing the riots and looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in July.
Naidoo, who was with KZN VIP Security, says Police Minister Bheki Cele named and blamed the company for its role in the vigilante attacks in Phoenix.
"He stated the security companies were involved in the shootings, unrest and we were part of what they called the Pheonix massacre and where he got that information from shocks me."
Naidoo says he was personally attacked online with fake images targeting him as one of the killers.
"They were photoshopped. They were also videos made of somebody else carrying a rifle, especially the one with an orange jacket, and they said that was Glen Naidoo. That was not me."
Naidoo, one of the company's founding members, stepped down after the unrest.
He says regulatory body - Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira) - is investigating KZN VIP following a request by the police.
