SAHRC holds decision to remove Richmond baboons
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
The Premier's Office says the fate of a troop of baboons on a Richmond farm will only be known once the SA Human Rights Commission has concluded its probe.
Two weeks ago six-year-old Seluleko Xaba and his 10-year-old cousin Sinethemba Mkhize were mauled by one of the baboons on the farm while out playing.
The Premier's spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya says Premier Senzo Mchunu has also written to the MECs of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs as well as Agriculture and Rural Development to look into the incident.
"He will obviously produce a report which will then guide the provincial government on how to move forward.
"We've heard reports that baboons are going to be moved but we don't want to be drawn to that issue as the provincial government because there is a formal investigation," he said.

Sibiya has also cautioned against speculation on the matter.
"[These are] matters that are raised in corridors or matters that are raised by people in certain quarters. We will only comment and confirm issues that are reflected in reports that are conducted by a formal investigation," he said.
The family has denied the newspaper reports that they have changed their minds about the fate of the baboons.
The children's grandfather was quoted as having said as long as the animals are fenced they didn't mind having them there.
There are currently about 25 baboons on the farm.
