Newswatch joined the team in Phoenix where one of the witnesses has been pointing out the spots were roadblocks were set up by residents along the Phoenix Highway.

Thirty-six people were killed in the area in alleged vigilante attacks that are said to have been racially motivated.

On Tuesday, Chris Biyela of Inanda gave evidence telling the commission he was stopped at one the roadblocks in Phoenix, pulled out his vehicle and verbally abused.

He says he was eventually let go after one of the people manning it said he knew him.

Commissioners walked along a stretch of the Phoenix Highway, stopping at each of the roadblock spots and inspecting them.

Earlier this week, another witness, Thulani Mseleku told the commission he too was stopped and attacked while driving through Phoenix in July.

The commission heard his sunglasses were snatched off his face and his cash and cash and cellphone taken at the fourth roadblock.

He says at the fifth one, shots were fired at his car and bricks thrown at it.

Today's inspection walk ended at the Phoenix police station, where the commissioners had hoped to meet with the station commander but couldn't.
