SAHRC calls on KZN govt to ‘speedily’ assist flood victims

The South African Human Rights Commission says the provincial government must act with speed in its response to the extreme weather affecting KwaZulu Natal.

Over the weekend, torrential rain and thunderstorms battered parts of eThekwini and the north coast.
At least six people have been killed in Durban, while two are still missing.
The homes of over 1,300 people were affected.
The commission says it's concerned about the continuous adverse weather.

Spokesperson Pervershree Padyachee says they will be assessing the affected areas.
"The commission will be engaging with all relevant authorities to ensure that the situation is addressed speedily and appropriately. The government appeared to be observant of human rights in responding to the ongoing floods and the adverse weather conditions, which continue to affect the most vulnerable communities."
