Pets and children easily fall victim to injuries during Guy Fawkes or any outdoor celebration that involves fireworks. Newswatch has compiled five tips to help you ensure their safety on Guy Fawkes night.

For your children

- Children should be more than a metre away from fireworks to ensure they are at a safe distance.

- Better yet, create a mark away from the display where children will know to stand behind.

- They should not handle any items that can ignite for instance, lighters or matches. Consider confetti poppers and glow sticks or other similar safer options.

- Closely watch children where fireworks are used, make sure they do not pick up lighted ones - they may still be ignited.

- Don't handle a sparkler that's lit with a child in your arms.

For your pets

- Keep pets in doors where they are out of sight and sound of the celebrations.

- Stay at home with your pet, if possible. They calm easily around company.

- Make sure there aren't any doors or windows where pets can exit through.

- Switch on the television or radio to mask the noise from outdoors.

- Herbal medication has been recommenced for pets. It will calm your dog or cat - start the medication a week before celebrations for optimum effects.
