Safety tips for Durban home-owners

KZN police are again urging residents in and around Durban not to open their doors to people claiming to be from the municipality, Telkom or Eskom without confirming their identities first.
The police's Thembeka Mbhele says there have been a number of cases recently where robbers claiming to be from the two companies gained access to people's homes.
She says most of the time these bogus technicians or municipal officials are dressed in uniform.
Mbhele says if they arrive at your home to sort out a problem that you did not lodge a complaint about - don't let them in.

"If the electricity people come to the house, there is no need for them to go inside if they are checking the meters. They check them outside. We also want to advise home-owners who may be having repairs done to do so during the weekend when they are around so that they will be able to identify anyone coming into their house," she said.

Telkom employees will only come to a house if a fault was reported by the owner.
Other residents in the home should not open the gate for strangers unless they have been asked to do so by the home owner.
It is also advisable that repairs be done when the home owner is present to verify the identity of the person who has come to fix the problem.
